Minnesota Twins slugger Justin Morneau held an autograph signing as part of his winter coat drive on Saturday, and the first fan showed up to get in line at 5:30 a.m., about 5 1/2 hours before the event was scheduled to begin. The Minnesota Twins have 30 days to sign Japanese infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka after submitting the highest bid for his negotiating rights. The Chiba Lotte Marines announced Friday they had accepted the bid for the 26-year-old Nishioka. If no agreement is reached, the Marines will not receive the fee. The deadline for bids was Wednesday.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka has moved a step closer to playing Major League Baseball after his Japanese team said it accepted a bid for the 26-year-old infielder. The Chiba Lotte Marines announced Friday that a team from the U.S. major leagues has bid for the negotiating rights to Nishioka. Lotte was notified of the highest bidder following Wednesday's deadline.

The Minnesota Twins have offered salary arbitration to three free agents, starting pitcher Carl Pavano, right-handed reliever Jesse Crain and second baseman Orlando Hudson. Pavano is a Type A free agent, meaning the Twins would receive two draft picks as compensation if the 17-game winner signs with another team.
